Her doctor tried everything he could think of to help her find lower back pain relief. After a while, the pain wasn't getting any better, so my brother and I became increasingly concerned. We aren't doctors, but it was apparent to us that the status quo wasn't working and we wondered why surgery wasn't being talked about. We've always heard that you should get a second opinion, so we persisted in telling our mother that she should see another doctor. The first doctor had convinced our mother that all she had to do for lower back pain relief was to keep taking all the medications that he prescribed. We couldn't believe all the pills that she was taking everyday. It was readily apparent that she was becoming a junkie. The situation wasn't her fault, she was just following doctor's orders like you're supposed to, but sometimes you have use common sense and ask some questions. The new doctor said that the first thing to do was to get her off all the medications, so he gave our mother a plan to get off most of the pills in three months. When my mother started cutting down on the lower back pain relief medications, she could see how addicted she was, but she stuck with it. My mother was tired of being in pain and she wanted to do anything she could to get rid of that pain. The new doctor told her that lower back pain relief was something that a lot of people worry about, and in her case, surgery was the only answer. Many of her vertebrae in her lower back had crumbled, and there was no amount of medication that was going to relieve that pain. If she didn't get an operation, she would have been in a wheelchair within a matter of five years. In my mother's case, lower back pain relief only came with surgery. My mother is much better now, although the pain isn't completely gone, so she's still on a few medications. She has been more active than she has been in a long time, and the number of times she has to reach for medication for lower back pain relief has dwindled to almost zero. I cry when I think about how much pain my mother was in for so long, and I wish I could find a way to punish her first doctor. I can't figure out why in the he didn't do a simple MRI on her lower back to figure out what was causing the problem. My only guess would be that he is either highly incompetent, or he was relying on the insurance money each visit produced. In any case, he may want to look the other way the next time he sees me on the street. But for the moment...
